“In the bulb there is a flower; in the seed, an apple tree; in cocoons, a hidden
promise; butterflies will soon be free!” These words are the opening lyrics
from one of my favorite hymns, “The Hymn of Promise,” by Natalie Sleeth.
The song is a message of hope and promise, reflecting God’s unconditional
and re-creating love. It reminds me that like the bulb, the seed and the cocoon,
we also can be changed into something beautiful. Faithful discipleship
offers the promise of transformation. It places us on the path toward knowing
our full potential as disciples of Jesus Christ and becoming the person
God intends for us to be.
